Before I Knew Why: My Journey with ADHD
At Ellipses of the Mind, we believe that hearing real stories from those who live with mental health conditions every day helps break the silence and create understanding.
Below, one of our readers shares her experience living with ADHD — from years of confusion to finally receiving a diagnosis that brought clarity, compassion, and progress.
“Before knowing, I was always chaotic — withdrawn or incredibly sporadic in moods and thoughts. I tried random methods to ‘figure out’ my brain or why I was ‘broken.’ The constant zoning out or disassociation was probably the most telling, along with agitation and trouble starting tasks. It drove me crazy that the simplest things I couldn’t do.”
“After finally getting a diagnosis at 28 and finding a combination of meds that worked, it’s been night and day. I’m able to keep relationships easier. I can start and complete tasks more easily. It isn’t the solution to my ADHD, but it’s made life easier.”
“I still need coping methods all the time — reminding myself how to communicate appropriately without snapping toward a muscle-memory response. Not every day is progress. Giving myself grace and time to find meds that work (and letting them take time) has been key. Knowing the ‘why’ behind my actions and thought processes helped so much — therapy in the beginning was essential and beneficial. Getting a diagnosis made it possible to live a better life. Without it, having a provider truly hear me was hard.”
